A Developing Country That Can Teach Hawaii an IT Strategy Lesson

IT Strategy on Ulitzer Vietnam is in the process of upgrading the entire country’s IT system. With support from organizations such as the World Bank, Vietnam is rebuilding not only physical infrastructure, but also starting from the ground up building new IT systems – including a large scale virtualization strategy. Hawaii may not be so progressive. The first line of an Associated Press story on Hawaii’s lack of a functional IT strategy goes like this: “In many ways Hawaii’s government runs its computers like the Internet age hardly happened.” (AP) The story goes on to expose Hawaii’s lack of IT policy, the fact they are using old systems, a mixture of Apple and PCs for individual users, have a 1960s version of disaster recovery (offsite physical diskette storage), and other parallels with industry that add more discouraging evidence to Hawaii’s IT shortfalls. Running in Parallel with Parallels

The recent Parallels Summit 2009 in Las Vegas appeared to be a successful event that was well received by industry attendees, independent software development managers and, perhaps quite crucially, the partners who decided to attend in this time of economic uncertainty. Big names such as Microsoft and Intel shared floor space alongside smaller lesser-known vendors such as FuseMail and Doctor Web. Refreshingly, those companies that did choose to come along appeared to suffer from less of the infighting and backstabbing that may have existed as recently as a year ago in the virtualization market. The initial dust seems to have settled on this arguably still somewhat nascent and emerging market sector and real solutions are being built to take tangible advantage of server consolidation efficiencies and managed hosted software delivery services. Here's a snapshot of what... (more)

Gladwell, Basketball, and Music

I was discussing the recent Malcom Gladwell basketball piece with a friend of mine. In this recent piece, published in the New Yorker, the writer and a guy he interviewed draw a parallel between basketball strategy and the biblical tale of David and Goliath. My friend told me that he's developed a similar insight, one with a parallel between music and the biblical story of Moses receiving The Ten Commandments. My friend grew up in a place not familiar with Western musical tradition or with the Bible, so naturally views his complete lack of knowledge as an opportunity to bring fresh insight to these topics. His insight came to him while he was watching me play a moderately difficult piano composition, the Chopin Ballade #3 in A-flat major. He had several thought-provoking questions. Why are you using the black keys disproportionately here?, he asked. There are about 20% ... (more)
