An Enterprise and Software Architect's Tools of the Trade

I have been doing Software Architecture for 16 years and Enterprise Architecture for the past few. Along with architecture I usually find as part of each gig, if not the main focus of each gig, process implementation or at least process improvement is required. It is not easy keeping up the latest technologies, processes, architectural techniques, and enterprise architecture framework improvements. I am a firm believer that to be an architect, you must also be an experienced developer. I do not believe in the hands off architect role and wish the Ivory Tower Architects would stop claiming to be Architects. They are theorist not architects. Modeling, Governance, and documenting are part of the architect's job, but in order to produce valuable artifacts you need to be getting your hands dirty. I also run into a ton of Googler-Developers. Meaning they have no idea why ... (more)

Parallels Aims at Internal, Channel Clouds

Parallels CEO Serguei Beloussov figures Google could dominate the cloud – the question is how much – with Microsoft at least a close second and maybe Apple can wrestle the rest of the wannabes like IBM, HP, Facebook, Adobe and EMC for third place. Then comes the internal clouds, where VMware tends to play, and the channel clouds. Beloussov expects to play in both the internal and channel clouds. That’s why Parallels is setting up a new fee-based SaaS FastTrack Program so ISVs can offer their software as a service and satisfy SMB demand for on-demand applications. Parallels says its scheme involves no development or rewriting of code, merely use of its virtualization and automation technology along with standards such as the Application Packaging Standard (APS), which enables ISVs and service providers to publish, package, provision and update the format of solution... Gladwell, Basketball, and Music

I was discussing the recent Malcom Gladwell basketball piece with a friend of mine. In this recent piece, published in the New Yorker, the writer and a guy he interviewed draw a parallel between basketball strategy and the biblical tale of David and Goliath. My friend told me that he's developed a similar insight, one with a parallel between music and the biblical story of Moses receiving The Ten Commandments. My friend grew up in a place not familiar with Western musical tradition or with the Bible, so naturally views his complete lack of knowledge as an opportunity to bring fresh insight to these topics. His insight came to him while he was watching me play a moderately difficult piano composition, the Chopin Ballade #3 in A-flat major. He had several thought-provoking questions. Why are you using the black keys disproportionately here?, he asked. There are about 20% ... (more)

Microsoft Adds Parallel Skills

ISC CEO Bill Blake and his people will join Microsoft's New England R&D Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Blake will report to Kyril Faenov, Microsoft's general manager of high performance and parallel computing, part of its Server and Tools Division. Plans are afoot to integrate ISC technologies into future Microsoft products. How and where is not yet clear. Microsoft is taking ISC's Star-P software off the market - the latest 2.9 bet... (more)
